Overshadowing Seward is Mount Marathon, the scene of one of Alaska’s most famous and challenging foot races. A friendly wager in 1909 resulted in this annual 3.1-mile run to the top of the 3,022-foot peak. The race attracts advanced runners from all over the world and is a highlight of Seward’s lively Fourth of July celebration, one of the best in Alaska. This race is probably one of the most dangerous too! The hospital is really close to the trail! Hundreds of people get seriously injured each year, this race is done by people who have spent many hours training for it. People also just hike it. If you do hike it people say to take food, water and a change of clothes in case you lose the trail and get stuck on the mountain overnight. They say one guy went up and never came down. They have never found him! My husband has decided that we need to hike it! We're not hiking it today being that we're not prepared but we will before we leave Alaska. I need preparation! Pray for us!
