The real eye opener was when we saw the front page story on the local newspaper. Hiking trails closed because of grizzly bear activity. Hmmm.. So after breakfast we headed to Walmart (yes, there is a Walmart in Cody, Wyoming) to purchase some bear spray for our upcoming hiking at Yellowstone. After leaving Walmart with bear spray in hand and thinking we only had one hour to drive a sign told us differently. The sign stated that our route was closed and the roads were impassable. The east entrance to Yellowstone was closed! A slight detour never hurt anyone right? Well a 4 1/2 hour detour does! We had to drive to the north entrance of the park in Montana.
The best advice we can give at this point is to call the National Park System (NPS) and ask which entrances are open before you go, especially during the off season.
After 4 1/2 hours we have arrived at Yellowstone!
